Pearly White Lies Your Dentist Knows You’re Telling

August 3, 2025

We’ve all been there—sitting in the dental chair, answering questions about flossing and brushing habits, and maybe stretching the truth a little. While you might think your dentist can’t tell, the reality is your mouth often reveals more than your words. From inflamed gums to tooth wear, dentists are trained to spot signs that don’t line up with your story.

Here are some of the most common lies patients tell and how your dentist knows the truth.

“I floss every day.”

This is one of the most common fibs dentists hear. Flossing daily helps remove plaque and food particles between teeth, but many people skip it altogether. Dentists can usually tell because gums become inflamed, red, or bleed easily when plaque builds up. If your gums bleed during your appointment, it’s a clear sign you haven’t been flossing as much as you claim.

“I don’t drink soda or sugary drinks.”

Sugary drinks are a leading cause of cavities and enamel erosion. Patients often deny consuming them, but telltale signs like cavities on the biting surfaces of teeth or acid wear on enamel suggest otherwise. Even diet sodas, with their high acidity, leave noticeable damage over time.

“I don’t grind my teeth.”

Teeth grinding, or bruxism, usually happens at night, so many patients aren’t even aware of it. Others may deny it because they think it isn’t serious. Dentists, however, can see flat or chipped teeth, jaw tension, and even receding gums caused by grinding. Left untreated, it can lead to jaw pain and long-term tooth damage.

“I quit smoking.”

Smoking and tobacco use leave behind clear signs that are hard to hide. Stains on enamel, receding gums, delayed healing, and a higher risk of gum disease all point to tobacco use. Even if patients say they’ve quit, the condition of their mouth often tells a different story.

“I only drink socially.”

While occasional alcohol use may not leave an obvious mark, frequent drinking often contributes to dry mouth, gum disease, and enamel erosion. Dentists can notice patterns that suggest more regular alcohol consumption than patients admit to.

“I brush twice a day.”

Brushing twice daily is essential, but not everyone sticks to the habit. Dentists can tell by the presence of plaque buildup, bad breath, or early cavities. Skipping brushing, especially at night, allows bacteria to thrive and leaves a visible impact.

Telling the truth about your habits helps your dentist create the best care plan for your oral health. After all, your dentist isn’t there to judge—they’re there to help you keep your smile healthy.
