What Are Amalgam Fillings?
As a short reminder, amalgam fillings are made from a metal alloy. Half of it can be gold, silver, or tin, but the rest is mercury, which is used as a binding agent. This makes it malleable and able to be shaped to your tooth before it’s bonded on. Afterward, your results can last for up to 15 years or longer with proper care. They are a long-lasting solution, but they may not be entirely aesthetic.
Are Metal Fillings Harmful?
Research has come out about mercury and how harmful it is to the human body in high amounts. This might have you worried about your metal filling, but just one or two of these types of restorations isn’t really anything to stress about. Many people oftentimes don’t get enough exposure to exhibit symptoms, but the vapor they release can be trouble for those who are:
- Nursing or pregnant
- Six years old or younger
- Naturally sensitive to mercury
- Have impaired kidney function
- Struggle with pre-existing neurological disorders
Should You Replace Your Amalgam Filling?
If you only have a couple of metal fillings and don’t fall under the points laid out above, then replacing your restoration is up to you. It may not cause any harm to your person, but it doesn’t hurt to talk to your dentist and physician about what they recommend. For some, it may be best to replace it entirely.
Thankfully, the modern counterpart is just as effective. Tooth-colored composite resin is used, and it doesn’t have any metal in it. You won’t need to worry about it expanding and shrinking when exposed to hot and cold temperatures. It will also blend into your smile, so you may feel more confident with it.
